LAPESA selects Alcatel-Lucent for network transformation toward VoIP

Posted May 24, 2007 * Comments(0)

Alcatel-Lucent today announced that it has been selected by LAPESA, a Spanish-based global manufacturer of tanks for the storage, handling and transport of gases, oil by-products, hot sanitary water and fluids, to update all its current telephony infrastructure and interconnect its various offices as part of a network transformation toward Voice over IP (VoIP).

After an analysis ofLAPESA’s needs, Alcatel-Lucent’s business partner GOTOR Comunicaciones proposed a cost effective companywide solution based on the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office platform, to support the corporation’s requirements for telephony services over an IP based network. As a result, LAPESA’s headquarters and large branch offices have deployed the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office to support more than 120 users with both TDM and IP based voice services.

“We listened to LAPESA and understood they wanted a network that would support the diverse communications requirements of their employees, one that would drive productivity and empower employees to be more efficient,” said Alberto Gotor, General Manager at Gotor Comunicaciones. “By taking the time to evaluate the costs, and also the ways in which LAPESA wanted to communicate across its staff, we designed a solution that will have a positive impact immediately while allowing for growth and further services transformation moving forward.”

“LAPESA’s move to VoIP has not only reduced the call costs and the overall costs of managing the network, it has also improved the way the company communicates and increased employees’ productivity,” said Rafael Mart?nez S?nchez-Breta?o, Alcatel-Lucent marketing manager in charge of Enterprise activities in Spain. “With their choice of the Alcatel-Lucent’s solution delivered through Gotor, LAPEZA has positioned themselves to benefit from VoIP today and to easily rollout new services in the future.”

Excelcomindo awards Alcatel-Lucent multi-million euro network expansion contract

Posted April 30, 2007 * Comments(0)

Alcatel-Lucent today announced that it has been awarded a multi-million Euro GSM/GPRS network expansion contract from PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk, (XL), one of Indonesia’s leading mobile service providers. The new contract will primarily cover the provincial capital and major cities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and enable XL to provide mobile service to a greater number of the island’s nearly 45 million inhabitants.

The project is a key step forward for XL in realizing its strategy of expanding its network outside of Java to tap into new subscriber markets and maintain its competitive position. Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide XL with hundreds of new base stations, its Evolium Base Station Subsystem hardware and software, as well as a comprehensive suite of network integration services, including network optimization, system support and general project management.

“In deploying this network our intent is to enhance the quality of communications service in Sumatra,” said Hasnul Suhaimi, President Director of XL. “Through the expansion of XL’s network, we will be able to meet growing customer demand for service and improve customer satisfaction. We also expect that enhanced communications service will have a positive impact on regional economic growth.”

The project substantially strengthens Alcatel-Lucent’s position in the Indonesian mobile market and extends the range of wireless solutions that Alcatel-Lucent provides to XL. Previously, Alcatel-Lucent successfully deployed 2G mobile network equipment for XL in the Aceh Province.

“XL has a strong vision for expanding mobile service in Indonesia, and Alcatel-Lucent is well-positioned to enable XL to realize that vision,” said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Asia Pacific activities. “This win increases our strength in the Indonesian mobile market and is further evidence of our commitment to meeting the communications needs of high-growth economies.”

Alcatel-Lucent announced today that it has been selected by SIC TV, a leading Portuguese private television broadcaster to supply a mobile TV solution. The solution will enable SIC to create mobile TV programs allowing Portuguese consumers equipped with video-enabled mobile handsets to experience and enjoy more television content.

The supplied solution includes Alcatel-Lucent’s Media Producer, a superior and reliable automation platform for the creation of mobile TV content. By allowing easy and flexible reformatting of different types of content for mobile handsets, as well as the creation of play list-style programming, the solution is ideally suited to respond to the needs of both content providers and broadcasters. Alcatel-Lucent’s Media Producer will allow SIC TV to blend live programs and on-demand content, seamlessly to consumers.

Jo?o Pedro Galveias, Director of SIC Multimedia and Thematic Channels declared, “SIC TV Channel has, since the start, been on the edge of new content and media solutions and now, with the widespread availability of technologies like 3G, TV over broadband and interactive TV, mobile handsets have become an important delivery mechanism for broadcasters and communication providers. The Alcatel-Lucent solution will allow us to freely and cost-effectively create, shape, format, and distribute video content over the new mobile SIC TV Channel.”

“SIC has been leading the way on converged services that connect television with telecom and, for that reason, it has been working closely with the Alcatel-Lucent innovation center in Cascais, Portugal on several innovative projects,” added Olivier Picard, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Europe and South activities. “Our leadership in converged applications and expertise in understanding and simplifying the delivery of complex mobile TV solutions further confirms that Alcatel-Lucent is an ideal partner for providing mobile multimedia solutions, bringing broadcasters, mobile operators and content owners new business revenue opportunities.”

Alcatel-Lucent media solutions include mobile interactive TV applications, which allow extensive interactivity and personalization, complementing traditional live TV with made-for-mobile content, creating the possibility to provide targeted advertisement supported content to end users.

Alcatel-Lucent is committed to support service providers in delivering a truly converged TV experience. Alcatel-Lucent has already established a leading position in interactive TV services, and already enables TV, video and music services for more than 115 fixed and mobile service providers around the world.

Globacom picks Alcatel-Lucent to build first 3G UMTS/HSPA network in West Africa

Posted April 26, 2007 * Comments(0)

Alcatel-Lucent today announced a contract with Globacom, Nigeria’s second national operator, to supply and install a wireless network based on UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/High Speed Packet Access) technology in selected Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin and Ibadan. This UMTS/HSPA network, the first one in West Africa, follows last summer’s successful field trial of the 3G platform on the Globacom network and will be built to provide one million more subscribers with state-of-the-art mobile broadband services. It reinforces Alcatel-Lucent’s worldwide leadership in mobile broadband and its leading position on the African market.

This project will enable Globacom, Africa’s fastest-growing operator, to expand the capacity of its network so it can accommodate an additional million subscribers while offering the next generation of sophisticated new services, including advanced multimedia, mobile broadband and converged services such as video call, video streaming and high-speed mobile Internet access on 3G mobile handsets, phone-to-phone and fixed-to-mobile video telephony, video greeting kiosk and video mail box. Globacom also will introduce high-speed Internet and mobile data services to business and residential subscribers through USB modems and data cards.

“We are very proud to be the first to deploy a UMTS/HSPA network in West Africa that will enable us to bring compelling new user-centric broadband services to Nigeria for the first time, thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s unmatched product portfolio” said Dr. Adenuga, Globacom’s Chairman. “Through our strategic cooperation with this trusted partner, we are constantly working to introduce innovative services and build the largest and best telecommunications network in the continent.”

“This agreement further proves Globacom’s confidence in our leading edge technology and our teams. Our long-standing collaboration in mobile networks is now extended to mobile broadband. This project is strategic for both companies because Africa is one of the fastest growing mobile market in the world and has huge potential,” said Etienne Fouques, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s carrier activities.

Fouques noted that this contract demonstrates Alcatel-Lucent’s commitment to help service providers in high-growth economies transform their services, network and business to profitably increase voice and data penetration, and enable mass-market broadband.

The agreement calls for Alcatel-Lucent to provide a turnkey solution including UMTS/HSPA radio and core network based on its IMS ready NGN (Next-Generation Network solution, along with network deployment, network and applications integration and services.

Alcatel-Lucent’s multi-standard radio access solution allows HSPA activation by simple software upgrade. With Alcatel-Lucent’s IMS-based infrastructure, Globacom will take a major step in its evolution toward an all-IP network and be able to rapidly and cost-effectively offer a wide range of new and differentiating multimedia services, while guaranteeing its subscribers end-to-end quality of service as well as optimized network performance and support.

Globacom recently awarded Alcatel-Lucent a major nationwide fixed and mobile network development and IP transformation program that aims to expand its national mobile capacity from its current 12 million subscribers to 35 million by the end of 2007. As a global leader in the development and deployment of third-generation (3G) networks, Alcatel-Lucent has deployed commercial 3G (CDMA2000 and UMTS/HSPA) systems for more than 70 operators worldwide.

Alcatel-Lucent wins major contract to expand Iusacell’s network in Mexico

Posted March 29, 2007 * Comments(0)

Alcatel-Lucent and Iusacell, the largest CDMA mobile telecommunications operator in Mexico, today announced a one-year contract to expand and enhance Iusacell’s existing mobile network to support third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 (R) 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology. The new EV-DO Rev. A network will enable Iusacell to continue the deployment of unique services such as IusaTV, BAM-Banda Ancha M?vil (mobile broadband services) and other multimedia services such as video telephony to its growing consumer base.

This announcement was made in conjunction with a contract signing ceremony that took place at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) Wireless 2007 trade show.

As part of this project, which will begin in June 2007, Iusacell’s existing Alcatel-Lucent-supplied base stations and core network will be upgraded to support EV-DO Rev. A technology. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide its 9400 AWY Digital Microwave Radio links to transport network traffic and transmission lines and antennas from Radio Frequency Systems. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent will provide integration, deployment, maintenance and project management services.

“Alcatel-Lucent’s technology is critical to Iusacell’s success,” said Eduardo Kuri, director of infrastructure and systems for Iusacell. “With this new project we will further strengthen our network, which is the most powerful, reliable and secure 3G network in Mexico.”

“Our expanded portfolio resulting from the Alcatel-Lucent merger, global leadership in CDMA and our multi-vendor integration capabilities were extremely valuable to Iusacell and allowed us to deliver a winning proposition for this complex and multi-technology project,” said Olivier Picard, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Europe and South activities. “This is our first EV-DO Rev. A contract in the region as a new company.”

Alcatel-Lucent leads the way in building next-generation communications networks in more than 21 countries in the Central and Latin American region. Alcatel-Lucent covers a broad range of technologies, being the regional leader in CDMA, Optical, IPTV, IP Call Center and Operation & Maintenance, and helping service providers, enterprises and governments meet the market demand for converged voice, data and multimedia services.

EV-DO Rev. A is an enhanced version of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO that increases the efficiency, data speeds and capacity of existing CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO networks. EV-DO Rev. A enables users to receive data (forward link) at speeds up to 3.1 Megabits per second (Mbps) and send data (reverse link) at speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. These increased forward and reverse link data speeds reduce data latency and will enable Iusacell to deliver multimedia services.
